Teacher whacks student with kendo sword
HIROSHIMA -- Officials at a private high school here have apologized after a student sustained a broken hand trying to defend himself from an attack by his kendo teacher, police said.
The 57-year-old teacher at the Sanyo High School in Hiroshima's Nishi-ku has been ordered to remain at home until officials decide how to deal with the incident.
Police are questioning school officials and others concerned in the matter and may question the teacher if the 15-year-old boy hurt in the case decides to file a request for investigations, Hiroshima Chuo Police Station said.
School officials apologized to students at an end-of-term ceremony on Wednesday, admitting that the teacher had gone too far.
Principal Yoshinori Tsuda vowed that a similar incident would not happen again.
"It's extremely regrettable," Tsuda said, referring to the clash. "I will try to make sure something like this never happens again."
School officials said that the student had failed to change into his armor during his kendo class on July 6. His teacher responded by turning on him and repeatedly hitting him with a bamboo sword of the type used in the martial art.
Officials said the boy raised his arms to defend himself and was hit on the right hand, breaking it. The right-handed student was unable to use his hand and could not sit for a series of tests held from July 7 to 10. (Mainichi)
